The tables have turned and there is really a tough time ahead as even the most exuberant economies have come to their knees due to the global financial crisis. Tremendous inflation, prodigious job layoffs and high price hikes have made life hard for everybody, especially the common man. People can hardly maintain their current lifestyles as the global economic breakdown has brought radical changes to their lives.
Grand Cayman: The most popular destination in the Cayman Islands is known for scuba diving and offshore banking. Unless you are interested in these activities though, there really is not much on this small island. The resorts are nice, but very expensive.
The idea is that you come forward voluntarily and disclose everything that you had previously hidden. Pay all of the taxes you owe for the unreported income for 2003 to 2008. Pay 20% of the tax as an additional penalty. Pay interest on the tax and that penalty. Then, pay a penalty based on the highest value of your hidden offshore banks in the last 6 years. On Front Page That penalty is either 20% or 5% (if you qualify).
The good news is that having an offshore bank account isn't shady, scary or difficult to open. In some cases, you can open one with a couple hundred dollars or even less. In some cases, you have to visit the country, which could be easy if you live near the Canadian border, for instance, or are taking a vacation sometime soon. There are, however, banks in Norway, Gibraltar, the Channel Islands (UK), and elsewhere where you don't need to visit to open your account. You can do it all through the mail.
It's also possible to be tied to a specific location, even if that is within the country you always grew up in. And still be sovereign, or at least partially so. But you are choosing to not be controlled by (or reduce to control of) an authority, government or otherwise.
You'll find plenty of websites that'll purport to help you, right up until the time you get a small brown envelope from your country's tax inspectors, inviting you in for a little chat.
